TEN THOUSAND SWORDS

ERIKA MASAMUNE

The Language of Swords [PRIVATE/Henrex] - Page 3 6EdIfMt

As she heard Henrex's response she sat down and sighed, why did ninjutsu have to be so cryptic and difficult? Could she even learn it? She still thought the way she wasn't supposed to even when she put a conscious effort into it and it was wearing down on her morale. How long would they train and how many times would she get it wrong and would she ever perfect it?

There was nothing that even hinted at remaining hidden in the philosophy! It's energy, stillness and resistance to to change, confidence and all that. How was I supposed to pull camouflage from that!?

She was quickly getting frustrated. She hated learning this way, she wanted to learn by doing it. Not just standing here and having Henrex shove it down her throat. she would rather have been told to hide and not get found instead of getting all this theory stuffed down her throat which she didn't even understand. Still Henrex was the teacher and she was the pupil so she'd sigh with resignation and look at him with with an uninterested expression.

She looked at the concealed weapon and raised her hand, in a second an exact replica of Henrex's shuriken formed in her hand as she span it round her finger. Unlike him there was no movement, no trick to make it appear which was visible. It was not there and now it was, simple as that.

"You mean conceal like this?"

To emphasise her point she formed five different swords around them both and sighed before they all vanished once again. If that wasn't "concealed" she didn't know what was. She just hoped this would give her something more practical to do other than listen to more and more words. She was a woman of action! Give her the action already.

The expression that Erika gave off caused Henrex to, at first, give a look of confusion, before realizing and putting a hand to his chin, knowing what the problem was in an instant. She was losing interest, and he knew that there was something that he was doing wrong, and he had to fix it. So, it was now Henrex's turn to listen and observe.

After all, it was his duty as a ninja and samurai to continue his own learning and understanding so that he would be able to better sharpen his own skills in the way of the ninja, along with allowing him to gain an understanding of one student, so that he may be able to replicate these teachings with another. Or, even combine all of the ways of teaching together, adapt to whatever student he may end up being faced with and be able to figure out how he could teach the way of the ninja to just about anyone, should they be willing.

Therefore, Henrex's silence and stillness would be the key factors in showcasing this, as he was solely focused on that -- seeing her general demeanor, etcetera. He was attempting to dissect her actions and mind in the best way that he could.

He watched her, seeing her copy his shuriken and spin it around as he did. Again, this was something that could potentially apply to a combat scenario, but not in practicality. So, shaking his head, Henrex slid the shuriken back down his sleeve, before rising to his feet. There was something that he could do in order to keep her interested, as well as give her something that she'd actually learn from.

Therefore, Henrex's body would be seen turning in quick intervals as he looked around for a place where he could show her a more practical application of the Ring of Earth. Then, suddenly, it hit him! He had the entire forest to serve as his example! So, with a grin, Henrex gestured to the forest as a whole. Now, he's got it!

"Maybe you'll understand this better. Think of this entire forest as the location for a battlefield. Our enemy is pulling out a full-on assault on this place. What troubles would they have in trying to fight here? Additionally, how would you take advantage of those troubles?"

Thus, Henrex's next lesson would begin. She wished for action, and she would get it!

It was true, she was tiring of his lectures on the philosophical sides of these teachings. So when he started turning around as if looking for an example she understood what he meant when he finally gave up and gestured to this entire forest and area around them. She understood what he was trying to get at, but it still seemed boring and dull. More questions, at least these ones were not cryptic and easy for her to understand though.

"They're a larger force, their mobility is limited in the confines of a forest hence why open-fields are more favourable for them. A single person can slip around and take advantage of the unit's tough time trying to sustain itself with all the obstacles. It breeds a lack of motivation and drive and a disheartened unit is easier to eliminate."

Erika wasn't stupid, the question was a pretty simple one and she still looked uninterested at this lesson. It wasn't enough that she'd downright be rude and toss it away into the wind and just leave or want to stop. Still, she was only giving a small amount of her attention towards Henrex since why relearn what she already knew. Where was that practical exam? What was all this theory if you couldn't put it into practice and use it then what was all this knowledge worth?

The simplicity of the question was another test, to see if the girl would be able to understand this kind of situation better, and therefore, allow Henrex to switch his manner of teaching in order to give Erika a more enthralling course of education in the way of the ninja. Thus, Henrex would be paying very close to Erika's reaction to this form of teaching.

Hearing her answer and sensing her disinterest, Henrex sighed and put a hand to his head. The main point of this would be that she would understand the core concepts of ninjutsu and be able to adapt that to her everyday life. Through that, he had hoped that Erika would be able to use this and put this in practice so that she would be able to create her own way of ninjutsu, one that adapted to her way of life and would be able to merge with how she fought.

But, this would not be the case.

Ergo, Henrex would then spend the next coming hours going over the various skills that a ninja learned through the art of ninjutsu. This would cause him to bring out the various weapons from his form of the Container. This would lead to naginatajutsu, shurikenjutsu, and even sui-ren, water training. All of these would be covered with -- for the most part -- usage of the weapons in question.

This would be a long process, but Henrex was sure that it would give Erika the kind of training that she wished -- as it was quick for him to discover through this that she was a woman of action, and Erika would most likely be drawn to the training furthermore, as the constant action from the usage of the weapons would be something that heavily weighed with her wish within these lessons.

Eventually, this would lead to the training within hand to hand combat. Admittedly, this was one of Henrex's least favorite portions to teach -- as he was a swordsman, and taijutsu was one of the least trained aspects of him. Even with Hakuda, the Shinigami's style of hand to hand combat, he still could hear the calling of the sword within his spiritual life, which was something that drew him to Zanjutsu, the Shinigami's way of the sword.

Thus, this would be something that Henrex believed would be a half-hearted lesson, as Henrex was not very enthralled to teach this. It was part of ninjutsu and he appreciated it, but he still preferred his sword than his hands. So, it would be rather quick lessons -- not just because of the disinterest of the teacher -- but also because of the simplicity of the techniques in general. He was sure that Erika would easily be able to memorize them and practice them, in order to become skilled enough with them to be able to defend herself accordingly.

Thus, the final lessons would come down to one of the most important, yet also the most difficult lessons in all of the way of the ninja: kuji-in. The nine symbolic symbols and the nine hand seals, as well as being where the ninja drew their main strength from. This would be a rather arduous lesson that consisted of pretty painful hand positions and Sanskrit teachings, in order for Erika to be able to speak the mantras of the hand seals in their mother tongue.

Thus, the training would go on from there, as the two would continue to go over the hand positions and mantras. It would be one of the final official teachings that Erika would receive from him before she would become a full, true ninja.
