The Sound of Drums [Yaksha/Snopy] Empty The Sound of Drums [Yaksha/Snopy]

Yaksha, The Anthropophagus

So much for patience. So much for doing things the easy way. So much for playing it safe. Yaksha had been hoping if he just stayed low, kept his nose to the grindstone, and let the big fish come his way, then he'd eventually get everything he needed all on his own. He had the benefit of some good press by now; he'd aided in at least a few disasters, and had spent no small amount of time building good rapport. But none of that was going to matter if World War Three broke out, and with the absence of a certain wolfgirl not long after a massive invasion into the African nations, the possibility was growing more likely with each passing moment.

It was time to take a risk, for real rewards. The fact that Yaksha hadn't considered being in the same room as Rukia Kuchiki, or Ravan, or any other number of unfathomably strong entities spoke leagues about his arrogance...but even he had to admit what he was doing now was something so hideously stupid that he couldn't believe he had enough guts. He'd stashed his gigai away for safe keeping, back at his place of residence; if he did die here, he'd almost certainly want it delivered to him at his new place of residence. Among other things.

He raked a long claw across his head, and through the neatly coiffed ponytail that sprouted from the back of his head, before taking one long step forward. He felt it, almost immediately; the powerful energy of the barrier surrounding the city he was about to enter, like standing under power lines. It made his teeth vibrate, made his eyes itch, gave him countless warning signs that this was a place where he didn't want to be...but he ignored them all, silencing his instincts. It was hard, harder than it would've been even just a month ago. It felt like, as he grew stronger, his self-control was eroding piece by piece. He felt flightier, more prone to fits of whimsy...and most unnervingly, it didn't even unsettle him anymore. It felt right that the strong be prone to bouts of whimsy.

He took another step forward, feeling the barrier snugly cover his body, as if he were wearing a piece of cellophane across his entire body. It made it hard to move, filled his head with a hideous pressure, but he continued to move forward, tongue lolling from his mouth in concentration, as he pushed forward, step by step. He had to hope that somewhere, not too far off, someone had gotten the message, and was rushing even now to investigate.

And more importantly, he had to hope he could actually manage to speak while this layer of energy surrounding him was trying its very best to repulse him. And most importantly, he had to hope that whoever came to greet him would be amicable to the notion of a peaceful hollow.

God, this plan had so many variables. It made Yaksha want to scream. But these were desperate times, now.

Everything seemed to be going so well. Patience had paid off, and he was reunited with the girl he loved. He was back in his hometown, and his inner hollow caused him minimal problems. More than that, the plans for wealth and the good things in life were forming even now. It was funny, people always begging for help. Snopy had been a lot of people's last hope, even on his determined mission for himself he couldn't turn them down. Was that not his life since he could hold a gun? Fighting a bunch of monsters that he could ignore and be fine, but doing so so he could help other people? Funny how many people could still be helpless in this day and age. Still, in his life he had aided hundreds of thousands of people. A year or two of focusing on himself wouldn't be a terrible thing. Of course it would be if some jackass wasn't illegally bursting through the barrier.

The Vizard groaned as he sensed the disturbance. He was an expert in all forms of detection. An important skill in his line of work, honed all the more wandering out in the wastes. The energy shield buckled slightly, parting but still repulsing. He could feel what it was. A hollow... His mind ran at a million miles per second, he was in defense mode. Until Kanna was fully recovered, any threat to the peace in the city was Snopy's business. The government couldn't exactly hold him back. He had self control and Shadin's support. He'd have to fuck up pretty hard to get pinned for anything. Besides, this was a hero economy. So much work trying to clean up the world was down to stray mercenaries and heroes. He grabbed his revolvers and brought his Zanpakuto to his hip. He wasn't in his gigai since the only person at home was a Shinigami, she could see him fine. Popping out the window, the blonde jumped out and began to rush towards the source of the disturbance. This thing hadn't instantly disintegrated. It could take some lives anyway. He may as well go. He could stand up to just about anything and put up a fight. Even if it was stronger than him, he could hold out til a proper military response arrived to back him up.

It wasn't long before he arrived at the source of the disturbance. Surprisingly a military response hadn't happened, yet. I'm going to have to talk to Shadin about their response time. Granted, the area felt empty. Perhaps it wasn't a huge issue. It wasn't a residential zone, and it seemed evacuated. Snopy lifted one of the revolvers and pointed it at the lone figure that remained, clearly the disturbance. A hollow...figures. Though it was strange, this thing seemed different. It seemed like it was using all it's energy fighting the barrier, if he pulled the trigger, this thing would most certainly die. It's eyes were so visible. He had a clean unobstructed shot straight through the eye socket, straight to the brain. "It's foolish to force your way through the barrier if you can barely manage it. You can barely move, can you? You do know all it'd take is a simple twitch of the finger and I'd blow you back to kingdom come correct?" This man had trained as a Shinigami. He was a trained marksman. He may have been laid back, but he had discipline. His entire body stood entirely motionless. Not a single muscle moved without explicit command. A light breeze blew, the bottom of his trench coat blowing in the wind. He had grown used to wearing them when going out for a serious encounter, it was good protection from the elements. Not that he needed it.

"I will admit, I'm intrigued. Why? Perhaps...you were hoping to be found? Mind your choices here, one wrong choice, and you'll be a corpse." It was a hollow, odds were he was going to kill it. However, there are a small number of hollow that aren't bad. Somehow repressing the urges that make 99.99% of their ilk into monsters. Normally he doesn't account for it, but something trying so hard...why? Perhaps the hollow had an insatiable curiosity? Perhaps...perhaps it WANTED attention, to be killed...purified. Or perhaps for some...other purpose. Maybe it was just arrogant and thought it could handle this. He was going to get answers.

Yaksha, The Anthropophagus

Yaksha's mind was on fire, his entire body struggling against the effects of the barrier. He couldn't even move at anything faster than the speed of a typical human, his limbs remarkably sluggish as he rolled his eyes towards the shinigami who had arrived, craning his eyes to put the man in the center of his vision, as if sizing him up. He inhaled, as if he were about to speak, and then...stopped. The answers normally came so quickly, his brain moving at mach speeds, the words plucked forth before he even realized what he was saying. But today, in this place, his mind wasn't nearly as fast. And behind the shinigami, he could see the air shimmering and coalescing, into a form he remembered well.

A bloated, grotesque-looking beast, with eyes like galaxies, and fingers as thin and spindly as a key that fit into a lock, seemed to walk out from thin air. His arms were now corded thickly with muscle, and his voice was pleasing, full of triumphant delight, as he leaned against the man holding the gun...not that anyone else would've noticed. Yaksha had hallucinations a few times in his life, but never when he wasn't actively trying to delve into his own mind. Today, simply -being here- was enough to set his mind aflame with pain and need.

"Yaksha! You know that you can't do this one. You know that this is just a fanciful little fever dream. You know I could cover this man's mouth at any time, and take away every advantage you have. I could deafen you to everything he says, and then you'd be fighting blind. Face it, guy. This time, you dun goofed. You followed your instincts into the lion's den, and it turns out you're not the master of your fate the way you like to portray. Just as the caterpillar is led to his death, you walked into a point of no return. So why don't you just give it up...or give me control. And let -me- fix this all. Just like I always had to fix your mistakes."

He inhaled, fighting the gasoline burning its way through his veins, clearing out a patch of thought slowly, with laborious intensity, and then speaking in a tone wracked with pain and anguish, need and anxiety. It was a rich, sweet voice, something that likely could've been very soothing in any other context...but right now it was downright pleading.

"Abstinant...over a year. Haven't seen my..."

What to describe Mirja as? A nuisance? An intrusion into his meticulous mindscape? A blemish? A necessary evil? Too many words came to mind, but finally after almost five seconds of silence, he was able to pluck the word out from the annals of memory, speaking it with such force there were a few flying particles of spittle. His teeth were bared now, as he began to clench and release his fist.

"Sponsor. In several months. Hungry. Hurts. Hard to think. Need...my pills."

From behind the shinigami, Yaksha could hear Salt breaking out into hysterical laughter, slapping his knee, and then shaking his head, as he took a deep inhale, leaning forward and pointing a finger at Yaksha.

"Oh, if you could hear yourself, Yaksha! It's almost worth everything up to now!"
