The One of Its Kind

UNKNOWN RACE
ἀδάμαντος

I. Basic Information

» Name: Unnamed

» Nickname: "Adamant"

» Age: Zero Years Old

» Gender: Genderless

» Height: Six Feet, Two Inches (187 centimeters)

» Weight: 540 pounds (245 kilograms)

II. Appearance

» Appearance: It is both startling and eerie to see how something so completely alien to humanity and similarly intelligent races apes their likeness in form so well. It is something that was not chosen by the Adamant, but what emergence hath given it. Perhaps it says something about the nature of 'life' that causes it to trend towards these ideals, although that would be a theory best explored elsewhere. For now it is apt to say that Adamant possesses the same humanoid form seen in other races; two arms, two legs, one head, standing upright. Its utmost height is at one hundred and eighty seven centimeters, considering its svelte body type. One would almost consider it unhealthy in their naivety, but possessing a statuesque beauty all the same.

Where the comparisons to humans begin to break down hint towards Adamant's true nature—most obvious one can see is in its approximation of 'hair', not really hair at all by any stretch of imagination. Rather, it is made of a completely different material than what would be expected, translucent like crystal and stunning scarlet red in color. In catching the light it would shine and sparkle, unmistakably like gemstone, despite that it flowed as though soft and loose. This 'hair' is styled to be untamed in disorganized curls, as it flows like a pelt around Adamant's back and down to barely brush against the ground.

This red luster is found in Adamant's irises as well, and in several spots on its chest, and even inside its mouth when opened. Truth being, Adamant is nearly completely consisting of this fiery crimson material—in every way a red-colored diamond except in that it lives and moves like a human against all odds. This grand design is simply disguised by a layer of powder along Adamant's body intended to give it that human-like beige skin tone. So that it appears to imitate a human being, but is most obviously not.

Notably, Adamant does not possess a gender, and neither does its appearance seem to trend too far into either's trappings. It is as equally masculine as it is feminine.

» Clothing: Simply more emulation of humanity's tendencies... the cloths strewn across Adamant's body serve the same purpose as the powder skin it wears, giving it a more approachable presentation. Though, what is worn is minimal at best. A single white button shirt is draped around its torso, usually left undone to bear its chest; it has short sleeves and a high collar. A short black skirt adorns its waist, with straps intended to go over the shoulders yet left hanging around by the sides. Lastly are the black brogues and long white kneesocks to cover her legs and feet; one of them is usually unkempt to create an asymmetrical appearance.

II. Personality

For one who was only just born, to have a personality already set in stone is an unexpected development; but perhaps there is more than what lies on the surface with this one. Curiously, Adamant acts as one who is matured, and clever, despite lack of experience and socialization with others. Deficient in knowledge, yet quick to pick up on new things—missing puzzle pieces falling into place, as it were. It is not like clay, moldable and capable of becoming anything. But, it is like a diamond in the rough, a beautiful determined form underneath an outer shell of dust and dirt and stone. Its personality is already set:

» Easygoing: There is a certain charm about Adamant that is undeniable to anyone who associates with it. An aura that makes it easy to speak with it, and open up to it with feelings and thoughts otherwise kept hidden away. Perhaps it is some sort of substantial essence of Adamant, or perhaps it is simply the relaxed nature it possesses. Never phased by surprises, nor prone to overreacting. Its mind is calm and collected under all circumstances, whether in danger or the unexpected.

Tolerant to the T... Adamant will neither judge those who open up to it. It speaks as if a counselor—one who others are meant to open up to. It offers advice and consolation when able, and is comfortable with taking responsibility for such things. It becomes very easy to trust Adamant, as the knowledge that it will never betray you becomes inherent amongst one another. That's the type of person it seems like.

There is a casual approach to every ordeal for Adamant; it only ever attributes the appropriate amount of seriousness to any situation and never more than that. Excess is waste, and it'll be the first one to tell you that. No need to stress more than is healthy, no need to grieve over something longer than necessary. Take it easy in life, and contentedness will be yours. That's why Adamant always comes off as lighthearted, mellow, and possessing a strong sense of humor. And sometimes, this approach opens up new paths in life that would have been missed otherwise.

» Resolute: Adamant's heart is strong, not so easily broken by hardships that would trump others. It is capable of taking suffering and shaking it off without too much trouble. In the face of loss, in the face of tragedy, in the face of destruction, Adamant can endure. It is not held down by the trappings of other such emotional beings. That is what allows it to stand strong and tall in the most dire of situations, and do what needs to be done.

And Adamant does have a strong sense of duty, after all. If it feels that it owes something, or that it has a responsibility to take care of, then it will perform that duty. It doesn't hesitate. It doesn't complain. If opportunity presents itself, Adamant takes advantage of it. It has a habit of resolving to things within its mind and considering them already done; it's a terrifying thing, how Adamant can become almost robotic in the way he carries its goals out.

» Thoughtful: Though outward appearances might not always show it, inside is a turmoil of racing thoughts. Adamant is never one to act recklessly, or with doubt harbored inside of it. Everything should be given its fair amount of consideration before a resolution is chosen. To go in half-assed and later regret it is wasteful... this lesson is ingrained within Adamant and what allows it to act so surely.

Sometimes, it gets lost in its own thoughts, daydreaming in the eyes of others. There is always so much to think about, and never enough time to think. Perhaps it derives some sort of satisfaction out of its own imaginations? Whatever the case, its rare to see Adamant ever at a loss. It is likely already a few steps ahead in its mind than it is in reality, considering what steps to take next and why. That doesn't imply that Adamant is fully intelligent, or informed, but it does the best it can with what it is given.

There's also a strong sense of empathy with this one, as it is not content to only think for itself. It has a great deal of others' predicaments to think about in its spare time as well. When its own problems are not enough to sate it, it tries to work out those of others'. Ever understanding, its another reason others take to Adamant, because of how hard it tries to help them in turn.

III. Character Background

» Emergence: There is no true history to a character born moments ago, is there? Perhaps then, the conception becomes the point of interest; for how did such a unique life form come to be? Adamant, a one of a kind entity, was not brought to life by any natural process—it came from nothing but the stone of Earth itself. A lifeless material with no intelligence; no different from rocks or mud, yet for some reason, a humanoid form came because of it and formed 'life'.

Washed up upon the shore of a cold beach, a stunning mass of crimson gemstone shone as the light of the sun struck it. Though its form was similar to humans, it looked nothing like the sort. It was found by some passersby, simply enjoying a relaxing stroll along the beach, whom took to the mass as simply a chance pile of riches. Yet it was by their jostling that the entity would finally come to and show signs of life; an utterly shocking development.

It had no name, no knowledge of anything that came before it, but it was able to be taught. Its more human-like appearance was granted to it by the strangers whom found it, whom covered it in a pale toned powder and gave it a single set of clothes. It styled the bountiful gemstone hair that was both soft and hard to the touch, and it gave it the name of 'Adamant' it wears today. There's nothing more to truly go into with this, as Adamant earned its freedom soon after. It did not know why such urgency, but the feeling was more intuitive than concrete. It was needed for a conflict yet to be solved, the only thing that was keeping it going. As long as this goal existed, unbeknownst as it was to Adamant, it could not sit still.

And as such, it walked into modern day.

END OF BACKGROUND

IV. Physiology

» Gemstone Body: To the point, Adamant is a lifeform crafted completely from non-living components: A yet unidentified gemstone to be exact. This gemstone is a fiery red in color, crystal in clarity, and breaks the Mohs scale in terms of sheer hardness... though we'll get to that later. Despite the lack of any such things as organs or biological material, Adamant is capable of life. So of course one would believe the source behind Adamant's animation is the presence of a soul... and yet that is not the case either. It possesses no such thing as a soul, defying the natural order of things.

The closest appropriate phenomenon that can be used to describe Adamant's 'life' is the concept of emergence, in which many unintelligent bits and pieces come together to form one intelligent being. It is not entirely accurate in this case, but shares many of the same trappings. To elaborate, Adamant's intelligence, personality, and memories are all spread throughout its body in every shard of its gemstone form. Losing pieces of itself will in turn alter Adamant to some degree, whether it be by losing certain memories, changing its personality slightly, or taking away its knowledge. This in turn, can be returned to Adamant by putting the piece back.

Similarly, Adamant's life is completely dependent on this conglomerate of gemstone keeping together. It cannot die, and can never die, not in any traditional sense of the word. If it is to be completely broken, then Adamant is put into a sleep, and will return to the living the moment it is put back together, like a puzzle. Of course, that opens the question of if the gemstone is completely destroyed and there is nothing to put back together, then Adamant would die? This would be false, for Adamant is not completely dependent on its original pieces. Other inorganic materials can be used to substitute its body, changing aspects of its character, but maintaining the same inexplicable life. Furthermore, not even one original piece of Adamant is necessary, putting to rest the dilemma of the Ship of Theseus. When every original piece is erased, something like a consciousness remains behind, to inhabit a new humanoid body of stone or otherwise that takes its place... truly testing the limits of science.

» Adamantite: While no true name is designated to the unnatural gemstone that Adamant's body consists of, its nature isn't especially complicated. It serves the role of a diamond in the supernatural realm of scales—that is to say it is so incredibly hard that its even notable among beings of great spiritual power. Their weapons would be akin to a steel sword against natural diamond, and thus fail to leave even a scratch in most cases. Yet in turn, like diamond, it would be prone to cracks and shattering under impacts on that same scale. Adamant is incredibly durable, but not invulnerable to damage. It has various strengths and weaknesses, like those shared by other gemstones:

Heat and cold barely affect Adamant, even unto extreme temperatures. As even natural diamond could survive the worst of conditions, a supernatural diamond would fare far far better in the realm of incredible power, rendering them near immune to these elements. Adamant also resists the forces of crushing and stretching incredibly well, despite its seeming fluidity of movement. Attacks of this nature will generally fail to affect it, leaving single powerful impacts as the core weakness of Adamant's body.

But speaking of such movement, it stands out as the main detractor against gemstone... a material usually lacking any malleability, yet somehow capable of human-like maneuverability. One look at how the hair moves is all it takes to behold this miracle, but upon outward influence, Adamant remains tough and unyielding. This completely supernatural phenomenon depends on Adamant's own will. His body only moves like a human's when he is the one moving it. To any other force, Adamant is as sturdy as a gemstone would be believed to be.

Another aspect of gemstones is their sharpness, and diamond has always stood out on top in that regard as well. When broken, it leaves behind a near perfect cut, leading into a razor sharp edge. Adamant is the same, but with a sharpness enhanced several times over. From the slightest cut, an entire limb might be severed if Adamant is not careful... or is intending it. Since injuries cannot stave it, Adamant could become even more deadly if its limbs are broken in a certain way.

» Power of Light: No spirit, means no spiritual energy. That leaves Adamant with a suite of supernatural abilities yet seemingly no supernatural energy to power it... or well, not quite. Adamant simply works off of another system of energy, and to explain it, the existence of inclusions must be explained first. In mineralogy, inclusions are defined as foreign substances locked inside the lattice of a gemstone, which detract from its purity. Amber, of course, is the most obvious example of this as one can see in the ancient insects it traps within. However in Adamant, there exist inclusions with a specific purpose, of absorbing light that passes through its clear red crystals and using it to empower their host. Hence, why Adamant keeps several spots on its chest open on its torso, to allow light to flow in and nourish the inclusions inside of it.

From even just small amounts of light, Adamant can output a disproportionate amount of energy in return, thanks to its inclusions. It is more than enough to keep it alive and moving, and thus allows it a degree of power that lands it on the spiritual scale. This includes not only an immunity to light-based attacks, but can in fact be empowered drastically by anything more potent than the sun's rays. Light alone provides all the sustenance and energy Adamant could ever need.

V. Natural Abilities

» Momentum: Zero years of age leaves Adamant wanting in terms of combat capability, of course, and so only one simple ability is utilized by it. 'Momentum' is the rising action, the slow work-up of Adamant's inclusions to shift from the stasis of calm and into the fervor of battle. In short, Adamant's tier is superfluous: It will rise to meet its opponent as an equal if given enough time, as its energy output is further and further increased, up until its inclusions run out of energy. This does not, however, increase Adamant's energy along with the output, meaning that Adamant is prone to exhaust itself faster the higher their tier becomes than their own. How this energy is used depends on what powers are available to Adamant at the time... but in the absence of those, merely provides physical prowess.

» Mind over Matter: As things are now, Adamant is a blank slate, empty and waiting to be filled. Though it possesses an adult-like maturity and mentality, the bareness of knowledge within allows for a high intake of information; an interesting combination that creates an incredible potential for development. Or, to put it a better way, Adamant is capable of absorbing and comprehending concepts that only adults would be able to, but with the same rapid growth seen in adolescents. This, in combination with the unique mental physiology of Adamant, all compounds together. It becomes an unnatural ability, to rapidly learn new things.

Contrary to Adamant's gemstone body, its 'mind' is very adaptable in order to maintain sanity throughout its constant breakage, loss and replacement of parts. Just as it can accept new pieces as parts of its living whole, Adamant can adopt new thoughts as natural as if their own. Anything within its sight is subject to its study, and pulled into its thoughts. More often than not, Adamant can make sense of the new ideas and come up with a way to implement them. Is this a replication of others capabilities? No. There is no such play with Adamant, allowing it to suddenly gain abilities not before possessed... but the knowledge will be retained, and old ideas can be used to create new ones. It is a complicated way to say that Adamant is quite adept at being able to figure things out in its own methods.

When utilized properly, Adamant is capable of rapidly developing new abilities based on all manner of different factors. Using what is available to it, what its body is constructed of, what knowledge it has acquired, and what it has gained from others. Once adopted, the road to mastery proceeds at a breakneck pace. It is not limited by typical biological burdens; lessons and trainings that stretch over years... are things that can be compressed into days for Adamant. The limiter for it is not the complexity of the subject, but whether or not it is possible in the first place for it. And that can be supplemented by its extremely adaptable body. So to say, despite Adamant's inexperience, it is a being that can reach the greatest of heights in time.

[mod]Just a few things that need adjusting:

Adamantite:

I don't inherently mind this ability, but starting off right with diamond-level toughness is a bit much. I don't really have a hard line you've gotta go down to, but I would ask it go down a bit.

Momentum:

At a glance I have to admit this pushes me to just flatly say no, but this definitely needs to have some sort of hard upper limit to it. I'm willing to be relatively lenient on that and assume it can get upgraded later, but just right on approval it's a little too stronk.[/mod]
